I love the history you've captured here. As for me, the balance between form and function is important -- so the calendar must be easily skinable (via css) or style/color configurable in order to match each web site's look.

The biggest features I'm concerned with are skinnability, and custom fields. So far, all of the modules lack considerably in these areas.

Some notes made after spending a lot of time on this today: The core events module is still chugging along - too buggy to use however and the code looks frightening. Smart-Thinker is good, but not in active development and no support for recurring events. DNNWorx site is dead. Intellisoft developer hasn't said a peep in a year. Xmod calendar is too basic. CVT Events is free but not very good. There are about 3 more events modules on Snowcovered.. none really suitable... though the pricey ported one looks solid and would suit intranet use. The best hope is still the core events item, but in my view it really needs some handy developers to volunteer some time on it.

This is a useful thread. Where abouts are we now on the various options for events? I see the DNN Events Module team are in the process of whipping up the energy to do something, but your comments above about bugs etc lead me to believe it will be a while before the module is a good choice. maybe I'm wrong?
